1914 2014 RESIST 100 YEARS OF WARS

Collage by Guido Vermeulen

1914 – 2014 :
RESIST 100 YEARS OF WAR
This mail art project is not in opposition or competition but in support of the existing mail art project on the anniversary of the so-called « great » war.
So we support and encourage the efforts of Jan Theunink and Paul Verhulst in Belgium,
those of Theresa Easton in the UK and the Hungarian project (a collaboration between networkers in Hungary, Germany and Austria, the world will follow).
We also salute the incredible individual efforts of artists like Eric Bensidon and Alain Cotten in France and Otto Sherman in the USA.

THE MAIL ART PROJECT WE PROPOSE is based on
°  the refusal of war as a destruction of people’s common togetherness and solidarity
War was conducted by those who did not know eacht other for the bank accounts of those who knew each other quite well (to paraphrase Valéry)

°  the refusal of any kind of war nostalgia or the recuperation of so-called peace by institutions like the EC or the UN (who have no problem launching new wars « in the name of peace and freedom»). War which is the destruction of humanity is now waged in the name of humanity. Talking about Orwellian newspeak, this is another fine example of applications during the last decade or so...

° the backing of a total rehabilitation for all soldiers who were executed by their own commanders and governments « as example », with excuses as cowardice, or desertion, or you have lost your equipment and other nonsense

° the backing of independent historical research on what happened during these « great » wars

You can fill in yourself other angles of interests, the list is limitless

The Munitionettes and Birtley

From Theresa Easton, UK

Note de GV
Angleterre 1914 1918

Message from Theresa to Guido:

 Dear Guido,
I came across this at a recent teachers event
hope the links works - fascinating.  Birtley is very near me - I know people who used to work in the factory until very recently.
thought you may want to see it
best

Not an April Fool’s Joke

Not an April Fool’s Joke (1914 – 2014)

Revenge is the perpetual fuel of reckoning
for old and new tragedies in the making.

The fire parade of hatred
burns the cycle of this planet
since thousands of years and more.

Ghost train at full speed running at collision course
escaping the pastorale of the landscape
till the landscape itself disappears.

Mountains outside any possibility of consolation
around the arena where flagellants perform their daily rituals
never speak in the name of the people
watching the spectacle with a mixture of shock and awe.
They remain silent; only the leaves of trees
shake some sounds of quiet breathing.

Wind whispers Xtremely
softly above the flesh-coloured carnage
of yet to discover mass graves.
The touring ragman shouts to sell labiate scoria!

Simple skulls with complicated gaps and cracks
imitate the hawse-holes of gruyere cheese.
Mocking birds defy the chamber of horrors,
the fiction of neutrality of a country named
Switzerland built on silent bank accounts and loud alpine horns.

How to photostat a rebellion?
Throw the knife in the water!
Disguise yourself as a cunning fisherman,
cutting and carving in your own veins
but NOT in those from someone else’s.

Man has not eaten god;
god has eaten man
(by becoming a nazi)

after Philip K. Dick (novel THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE)

Water op de maan?
Vraag zonder interesse,
proest maan in water.

Gekte van een grens,
alsof men de samenhang
ontkent van sterren.

Geloof is een vorm
van denkerslobotomie,
bezoekuur verplicht!

Medisch commando
pleegt aanslag op mijn lichaam
in het knekelhuis

Slakkenslijm op pad
ondervindt trage weerstand
van tuin naar keuken

Zelfmoord in een plas:
zeer moeilijke oefening
als je geen worm bent.

Ziekte maakt me week,
ween zomaar zonder reden
voor het minste leed.

De goden zijn wreed,
allen per definitie,
geen uitzondering!

Mildheid van een bij,
brandende autobanden
zijn steeds mensenwerk.

Uitgestorven vis
zoekt verdwenen haringbank
in zee zonder hoop

Paradijsvogel
verbannen naar Dante’s hel,
opstand der kringen.

Uitgesloten berg,

ALLEN TE SAMEN / ALL TOGETHER NOW:

mijn schildpad is dood!

In de herfst sterven;
wat is er natuurlijker
dan een vallend blad?

Hij bloedde zachtjes
leeg naar een vallende ster.
Aarde schreeuwde dicht!

De oorlogsschepen
strandend op koraalriffen.
Het einde nabij …

De weerstand van slijk,
waterwederopstanding
in het Vlaams, misschien?

Een brandende god
veroordeelt op het schavot
der geschiedenis.

Lijken spoelen aan,
lossen nooit het geheugen
op der getuigen …

Beenderen spreken,
het gebit niet verdronken,
roepend in de zee!

Woorden liegen steeds
in de monden van de macht;
maan herhaalt lachend.

Knikkerterrorist,
lachend in de warmte
van sluitende hand.

Tegen de wanden
huizen stil de vleermuizen,
hun honger huivert!

Laat drogende oogst
is het lot van mijn ogen;
blindheid doet mij zien.

Some NOTES:

5

In the trenches of WW1, the Flemish movement in Belgium started.
Commanders were French but most soldiers Flemish.
The soldiers could not understand their orders; "et pour les flamands la même chose".
How many men died for that?

8

Reference to the murder of Lumumba.
His corpse was hacked to pieces and dissolved in acid.
The dentures did not dissolve and were thrown in the ocean.
